Artist Statement
The works you see in this room are representative of my personal journey throughout my undergraduate career. My use of textiles and printmaking also illustrate the mental and physical hardships I experienced during that time frame.
Each dress is a symbol of me; one shows the past while the other focuses on the present. Both outwardly exude the picturesque elegance of a princess. However, the ugly inner disorder monsters are thinly veiled under a layer of chiffon.
Myself in the Past showcases how I tried to present myself with a princess-like facade during my overwhelming struggles of coping with my own mental monsters, while stretched thin by the words of my father’s demons. From the artist to the viewer, I ask you to read the words spoken on Myself in the Past in the voice of a man who is not in his right mind.
Myself in the Present depicts how I have learned to work with my personal monsters, and how I found the strength to tie the demons’ tongue.
Freedom in Metamorphosis delineates the growth I have experienced as a person and an artist.
Printmaking allows me the freedom to express myself and gives me the outlet to show who I am. I love this medium because although I do the same print, each copy is an individual image.
The threads of my maternal lineage developed my love of working with textiles, especially sewing, which I learned at a young age from my grandmother.
